  11. Long ago, according to legend, Tyi Wara, a half-human, half-animal creature resembling an antelope, taught the Bamana people how to grow crops. The people were grateful and held ceremonial dances still performed today in Tyi Wara‚Äôs honor.

  13. This pair of dance headdresses has long horns that represent those of the powerful roan antelope, and the triangular forms suggest its mane. The baby on the back of the female symbolizes new growth and the hope for fruitful fields.
